Emergency Pediatric Care
Emergency Pediatric Care is an education program from the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians. This
program is for prehospital practitioners committed to providing quality care for pediatric patients.
What EPC Teaches:
Application of the Pediatric Assessment Triangle.
Family-centered care.
Assessment skills for pediatric patients.
Critical thinking skills.
Transport decision making.
Physiological and developmental stages of childhood.
Course lectures and interactive sessions address:
assessment, airway, breathing and circulation;
understanding and caring for children;
hypoperfusion and shock;
cardiac emergencies and congenital cardiac defects;
common medical emergencies, trauma;
newborn resuscitation;
vascular access;
care team management;
spinal motion restriction;
children with special healthcare needs;
identification of life threats;
scene choreography;
transport decisions;
child abuse and neglect.
Who Should Take EPC:
All EMS practitioners who care for ill or injured children should take an EPC course. Typical participants will include EMT-Basics,
EMT–Intermediates, and EMT-Paramedics. Physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other health care professionals who work with
prehospital care providers are also encouraged to attend.
What Are the Objectives of the EPC Program?
Learn the unique aspects of pediatric anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology that affects pre-hospital assessment and treatment.
Integrate pathophysiology and assessment findings in the pediatric patient.
Improve patient assessment skills while incorporating an understanding of the developmental considerations, diagnostic skills and therapeutic interventions necessary to properly care for children.
Develop and refine the ability to identify conditions that require emergent or urgent intervention and those that require transport to a definitive care facility or higher level of healthcare provider.
Improve overall comfort, knowledge and skill levels of EMS practitioners when caring for sick or injured children.
Identify and communicate pertinent findings and interventions to other healthcare providers, including those at the receiving facility.
Course Requirements:
Successful completion of the course entails attendance both days. Students who successfully complete the EPC course will receive a
certificate of completion that is valid for four years.
